Moonlight Madness

Mother Nature actually read the memo this year and treated us to perfect weather for the Club's Annual BBQ at Moonlight Madness. The result? A fantastic afternoon filled with great food, live music, cold drinks, laughter, and enough burgers to keep everyone smiling.

As always, our members stepped up to volunteer their time, talents, and sense of humour—because every successful BBQ runs on equal parts teamwork, ketchup, and good-natured chaos.

A big thank you to our set-up crew and to the Guiry's, Gordon's and Gail Allman for loaning their tents. They kept our volunteers, guests, and the ever-talented Young Lovelies comfortably shaded while they entertained the crowds. Let's face it—sunburn wasn't part of anyone's job description.

Moon mad 2026 2Mastering the grill (without setting off any emergency alerts) were Kevin Alto, Bruce Hooey, and Linda Skipworth, expertly flipping burgers and hot dogs with the precision of seasoned pit masters.

Keeping spirits high—and beverages refreshingly cold—were our bartenders Cynthia Payne, Suzanne Reading, John Shaw and Almut Davies. They proved that cold drinks and friendly smiles are a winning combination.

Our runners— Kathleen and Don Holdbrook, Cheryl Hooey, Kate Baxendale, and Lori Peterkin—deserve special recognition for making sure orders were correct; customers were happy, and nobody accidentally paid for someone else's three-hotdog lunch. No small feat during the lunchtime rush!

Ian Davies worked the cash table, and Syd Markham manned the information table in the club house.

Inside the kitchen, Maureen Fletcher and Carol Wardley were busy chopping, slicing, dicing, and performing culinary magic behind the scenes.

And then there was the crew that deserves a standing ovation—the take-down and clean-up team. They came back after the crowds had disappeared, when the music had stopped, and the glamour of the day had been replaced by folding tables, packing tents, carrying in chairs, scrubbing grills, walking tents up streets. (ok that one is fun).

Behind every successful community event is a long list of people who quietly pitch in, solve problems before anyone notices, and somehow make it all look effortless. It takes far more than two little words to express our appreciation, but they're a great place to start.

Thank you. Your generosity, enthusiasm, and willingness to lend a hand make our club stronger, more welcoming, and a lot more fun. We couldn't do it without you.

As the season ramps up, so do the curling events.

The 4-Town is a regional bonspiel with teams from Haliburton, Minden, Bobcaygeon and Fenelon Falls, with 2 teams representing each club.

The 4-Towns are open to all club members and offer an opportunity to those that have never played in a bonspiel, to experience bonspiel play in a friendly, no pressure setting.

All 3 upcoming bonspiels are now full.   Thanks to all of you that signed up.

For our 2nd year, we are leveraging the Curling Ontario Volunteer Award program to recognize outstanding volunteerism in our club!

This year again we solicited for nominations and appointed a small committee to review
and determine the winners. We received 16 nominations and would like to thank all those
who took time to submit their comments.

Andy Skipworth - Volunteer award 2026

 Andy Skipworth

Andy retires from the Board this year, having looked after our fundraising portfolio – championing and running events such as Moonlight Madness, our golf tournament as well as organizing merchandise and rock handle sponsorship. He has also served as our Ice Manager. One season, when our Ice Tech was sick, he pretty much became the Ice Tech for a few months.

Taking it upon himself to build his expertise through additional training, Andy is passionate about creating a great experience on ice for us all, and diligently oversees his team that looks after installing and removing our ice plant each year. Andy is continuing as our Ice Manager and valuable member of our Capital Project Committee!

Mary Carr

Mary has made many contributions to our club over many years – including serving as our President. She has supported many a bonspiels as drawmaster, organized, baked for and entertained us all!  For several years now Mary has played the crucial role of running our Learn to Curl program. This is a critical program for our club, being the entry point for new member.  Mary’s dedication to this program has ensured our club continues to flourish and grow. Thank you so much Mary, for your service to our club and for ensuring we all have fun along the way!
Mary was not able to be at the meeting to accept her award in person as she was away on one of her exciting travel adventures, so we will present it to her at a later date and be sure to share a photo.

Bruce Hooey - volunteer award

 Bruce Hooey

Bruce has served as our Treasurer over the last 5 years. While most of his work takes place “behind the scenes”, the financial health of our club affects us all. He spends hours each week ensuring bills are paid, member expenses are reimbursed and our books are balanced.

Bruce supported our OTF grant application last year, preparing all the necessary financial documentation that supported our successful application. In addition to his role as Treasurer, Bruce convenes 2 leagues, has previously convened our Brandon Bonspiel, and spends his Sunday afternoons early in the season, coaching our new Learn to Curl members!

Thank you Bruce, for your time serving on our Board and for your ongoing volunteer support of our club!
